How Long Does it Take to Get a Roofing Quote?

If you are in need of a new roof, perhaps you are wondering how long it takes to get a roofing quote. Depending on how much research you put into the process yourself, you should be able to get a roofing quote in  3-10 days.  We recommend taking the time necessary to find a highly qualified contractor.  Here are steps to getting a roofing quote.  If you are in a hurry and want to expedite the process, you can skip some of them, but the ultimate quality of the job might suffer.

Identify Quality Contractors

This is where you can take a few steps or take a lot of steps.  The quick way would be to call 2 or 3 local contractors you’ve seen around and ask them to come over and give you an estimate.  If the contractors happen to be good ones, you may get an outstanding job.  However, randomly calling contractors you’ve heard of can lead to random results, bad as well as good.

Adding a few more steps would mean gathering more information before having contractors over to give you estimates.  Begin by asking others for their recommendations.  Hearing firsthand reviews from others is a great way to initially evaluate who to call and who to avoid.  Also check local review sites like Angie’s List if they are  available in your area.  Start to put together a list of possibilities.

The next step would be to call the contractors on the phone and ask them a few questions.  Ask about their experience, the experience of the crews they use, whether or not they are licensed and insured, how problems are resolved and who their references are.  Check the references or at least drive by the house to give it a look.

Contractor Appointments

Set up appointments with the 3 contractors you think might do the best job.  They’ll come over and ask you questions about the roofing material you intend for them to install, when you need to get started, whether or not the roof is leaking currently, how old the roof is, and more.  They may get on the roof to take measurements or base their estimates on the footprint of your home, the roof’s pitch, the number of peak and valley, dormers, etc. These days, many roofing contractors use software that does much of the work for them.  They plug in the dimensional details and the program gives them the answers they need to write the estimate.

Getting the Written Estimates

Once he’s got the information he needs and has left, he should get back to you within 48-72 hours with a bid. Do keep in mind that the more steps you take, the greater the probability that you will get a job done right, and one that will keep your home well-protected and looking great for many years.
